We talk through your goals, your daily life on your land, and what you'd like the space to become. Together we define the scope of the work ahead.
Then, we listen to the land.
A careful site analysis of light, soil, slope, water, and existing plants becomes the foundation for a vision we develop together.
2.
Where the magic happens.
Through listening, sketching, and concept imagery, the early ideas evolve into detailed landscape plans, planting strategies, material palettes, and finally construction documents that turn vision into something buildable.
3.
With the design complete, the work moves into the ground.
We help you find the right contractors and craftspeople, and we stay involved through installation, collaborating closely to make sure every detail is executed with care.
For smaller projects, we'll often handle the install ourselves.
4.
A garden is a living thing, and living things take time.
We stay close through the first year, visiting the garden, tending to its health, replacing what struggles, and offering guidance as the design begins to settle into itself.
After that, we can shape a longer-term care plan together if you'd like ongoing support.

Inspired by this spirit of stewardship, DIWATA design studio creates outdoor living spaces designed to bring out the best in both nature and people. We invite you to fall in love with your land and rediscover the joy of being outside at home. Through low-input, native and climate-adapted plantings, and thoughtfully sourced local materials, we design regenerative landscapes that are both beautiful and enduring, spaces that honor their place on earth while supporting the lives lived within them.

Susanna B. Fraker — imagines like a daydreamer and guides like a steward.
With a unique sensibility to context, culture, scale, systems and seasons, Susanna’s career is centered around designing outdoor places and ways for people to connect with each other and with nature. Her passion is to create landscapes that spark joy and resonate with the essence of place. As a mixed-race Filipino American, Susanna’s work is a lifelong exploration of what it means to be "of a place." Navigating two heritages, she sees landscape as both a vessel for memory and a foundation for self-discovery. She believes that sensory connections to land shape our identity and deepen our responsibility as caretakers of the earth. With an undergraduate degree in Art History from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and a Masters of Landscape Architecture from UPenn’s Weitzman School of Design, Susanna spent a decade in the landscape architecture and public space non-profit worlds in San Francisco, shaping landscapes for parks, playgrounds, campuses, multi-family housing, and public art installations in close partnership with community groups and city agencies. After settling in Portland, Oregon, Susanna began working at the scale of the home garden, helping friends and family reimagine their yards as habitat, refuge, and gathering place. These early residential projects, born of curiosity and care, became the start of her next chapter. Today she designs residential gardens across the west coast, drawing on native plant palettes, climate-resilient strategies, and a deep attention to the particulars of each client and site.
